つまりメルが今回の映画製作を通じて特に強く感じたことは、例えば残酷で野蛮に見えるマヤ文化における人身御供と、
納得できる明確な理由もなく兵士をイラクに送りだし死なせていることの間にどんな違いがあるのかということ。
そしてあれだけの偉大な文明が、実はその内部から崩壊していったことと現在のアメリカの状況には共通点があるということ。
Apocalyptoは決して政治風刺的な作品でないが、脚本の段階からアメリカの政策に強い疑問を感じていたメルの思いがこめられているようだ。
メルもいうように、これはマスコミが好む「誰それは右・左」というような些少な問題ではなくアメリカ人が、ひいては我々全員が
見過ごしてはいけないという警告だと思う。今世界は自分で自分の首をしめつつあるということを。
